It was the catalyst for a 20-year journey by the self-styled 'Muslim refusenik' to study the problems she felt plagued Islam, culminating in an explosive new book, 'The Trouble With Islam: A Wake Up Call for Honesty and Change.'
In the book, recently published in Canada and available in the United States in January as well as other countries soon, Manji calls for Muslims worldwide to usher in an era of reformation through introspection. "

Besides politics and literature Edward Said’s other great love was Western (‘classical’) music. Here someone who knew him and heard him play reflects on the metaphorical power of music to symbolise the resolving of stubborn human difference.






Just in case it gets overlooked in the appreciation of Edward’s political focus and literary brilliance, I want to remember his love of music. It was not the foremost quality I recognised when I first met him early in the 1980s at John Berger’s house in the French Alps. I had read Orientalism with great respect and enthusiasm, but did not know what to expect. To my delight Edward was immensely handsome, tall, with dark hair and an engaging smile. He turned to all corners of the table as we ate, to make contact with every individual. His warmth and openness generated responsiveness and communication in others.
To my surprise Edward was intensely musical. Later I was to learn how well he played the piano; then we just argued passionately about the different ways of playing Bach. John favoured Glenn Gould, I was more for Andreas Schiff. But Edward was a serious pianist, as was made clear when we discussed technical difficulties, and later when he played for us at his apartment in New York. Later, when he was a Visiting Fellow at King’s College Cambridge, although already ill and with lectures to give, he devoted an hour a day to practicing – using the grand piano in the Dining Hall, repeating the same phrase, a few bars, over and over until he had got it right, I was told by an awed student. Edward Said’s work was both championed and traduced in the ‘orientalist’ world that formed much of its subject. Faleh Jabar sees in this reception a paradox that makes Said himself a character in an unfinished book: the struggle for reason among the Arabs.

The first time I saw him in the flesh was in London in 1992, where he was delivering a lecture, his reason deployed in the service of a great passion. I remember wondering at the time how he could free his reason from the tyranny of passion.
The last time I saw him was in New York University, delivering another lecture alongside his mate Noam Chomsky. This time, it was the turn of his passion to serve and help us grasp a sophisticated train of reasoning: and I wondered how he could reconcile his passion with the dictates of reason. "

I had been talking with Edward about doing an interview with him for over a year. His mortal illness, which he bore with dignity and without shame, made me want to do it properly. But, as is the way with start-ups like openDemocracy, I was distracted. On 4 December last year BBC Radio 3’s Nightwaves programme broadcast an interview with him which he had told me he disliked. But given its range I thought we might use it as a basis for an email exchange that would not be too tiring for him. He agreed and the BBC let us make a transcript. But, as we were both so busy, it was not to be.
What follows, then, is an unauthorized edit just of his answers, without the questions (or the interviews with others that intersected the programme). It does not touch upon the issues I planned to raise with him: his disgust for American policy, his disdain for those he saw as Arab quislings, and his wider views about Iraq and President Bush.
You can see why he hated the kind of interview it became. When Israeli writers who oppose their nation’s leaders are interviewed in the West, there is usually a welcome for the critical space they open up: the democracy of their opposition is enhanced and shared. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoeksrapport van de Universiteit van Tilburg dat maandag is gepubliceerd en is gemaakt in opdracht van het ministerie van Justitie. Er waren al signalen over de massale doorreis. De schatting over de aantallen komt van de doelgroep zelf. AMSTERDAM - Scholen en sleutelfiguren in de allochtone gemeenschap moeten zich bemoeien met de problemen van meisjes uit traditionele gezinnen. Dat zegt schooldirecteur J. Krikke vandaag in Trouw. Hij reageert hiermee op de dood van zijn 18-jarige Turks-Nederlandse leerlinge Zarife. Zij werd op 12 augustus in Turkije door haar vader neergeschoten met een jachtgeweer.


Zarife volgde een mbo zakelijke dienstverlening op het Regionaal Opleidingscentrum in Almelo. Omdat zij zich naar de smaak van haar vader tezeer onttrok aan diens regels, gebruikte hij geweld tegen haar. Zarife vluchtte in januari naar een blijf-van-mijn-lijfhuis in Ede en waarschuwde de politie, maar haar vader ontdekte waar zij zat.
Daarop verhuisde zij naar de opvang in Venlo. Zij schreef zich uit op haar school in Almelo. Hoewel de politie het haar had afgeraden, kreeg Zarife in mei in Venlo weer contact met haar vader. Van de zomer ging ze op vakantie naar een nichtje in Duitsland. Toen zij niet terugkwam, gaven hulpverleners haar als vermist op. ,,Die hadden een gesprek met de vader gehad'', zegt Johan Gortworst van de Federatie Opvang, de koepelorganisatie van vrouwenopvang. ,,Hij zei te respecteren dat zijn dochter daar zat en dat hij haar niet meer zou lastigvallen. Maar het ziet ernaar uit dat hij alleen zijn kans afwachtte. De familieleden in Duitsland hebben Zarife waarschijnlijk in de val gelokt met de bedoeling haar naar Turkije te krijgen.''

De positie van vrouwen in het Midden-Oosten is niet altijd even gunstig. Maar volgens dichteres Maysoon Sakr, dochter van een sjeik uit wat nu de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten zijn, geven de laatste vijftig jaar veel verbeteringen te zien. Al een jaar of vijf ligt de Neandertalerexpert zwaar onder vuur van collega’s, omdat hij veel te snel veel te vergaande conclusies zou trekken. Maar nu slaat Trinkaus weer terug. In een onderkaak die in een Roemeense berengrot gevonden is, ziet hij opnieuw kenmerken die zijn stelling onderstrepen: de Neandertalers leven in de huidige mensen voort.

Een decennium geleden kreeg Trinkaus een grote naam in het wereldje van menselijke fossielenonderzoekers. I am a student and I am writing a thesis about religions and aggression. I believe that all religions support peace and not violence.

But my question is: Which explanation does Islam give to violence? Is it the cause of culture, the cause of politics, the cause of power... or is it the cause of not being in peace with ourselves? I believe that the last one is always the cause of violence. The other things could play part in it. Do you agree?

My second question: Is it true that jihad has two meanings? In which one of them is finding peace with ourselves? Where can I find more information on this issue?

Afgelopen weekend -waarin joden het nieuwjaar vierden- was het drie jaar geleden dat Ariel Sharon aan de Tempelberg in Jeruzalem een bezoek bracht. AMSTERDAM - De stadsdeelraad van Oud-Zuid in Amsterdam en het bestuur van de omstreden Arrahmane moskee in De Pijp hebben zaterdag met elkaar gesproken over de onrust rondom de moskee. Het gesprek leverde een reeks beloftes op van de kant van het moskeebestuur, maar of de raadsleden er echt een geruster gevoel aan overhielden, is de vraag. De delegatie van de moskee schoof alle problemen klakkeloos in de schoenen van een oud-bestuurslid en ontkende zelf iedere blaam.
De Arrahmane moskee is al geruime tijd in opspraak wegens geruchten dat de Tabligh-beweging, die eigenaar is van de moskee, betrokken is bij het ronselen van moslimjongeren voor de heilige oorlog, de Jihad. Dat leidde tot onrust in de buurt. Ook spelen er binnen de gemeenschap diverse problemen door het gedrag van een voormalig bestuurslid en is er ruzie met een Marokkaanse oudercommissie, omdat zij de moskee willen overnemen. "

De klacht van de Antilliaanse gemeenschap is al jarenlang dat er in Den Helder over hen wordt besloten en nooit met hen. De nieuwe aanpak moet daar een einde aan maken, zegt De Groot. ,,Ik wil met de Antillianen om tafel gaan zitten. Want we kunnen wel degelijk heel wat dingen overlaten aan deze groep. Als ze zich maar beter organiseren. Dat is een taak die Da Costa Gomez op zich moet nemen. Hij kent de bevolkingsgroep en heeft in andere steden al goede resultaten geboekt.'' Uiteindelijk moet het Antillianenberaad met voorstellen komen voor beleid, zegt de wethouder.

Een organisatie als Triton, die nu veel projecten voor Antillianen op poten zet, zal zich moeten schikken in een 'dienende rol', stelt De Groot. Met andere woorden: Triton zal gaan uitvoeren wat het Antillianenberaad heeft b"

It is something akin to a small revolution for Morocco. Tamazight, the language of the country's Berber population, will now be taught alongside Arabic in public schools.
A pilot program to teach the language in 371 schools across the country started with the beginning of the new school year last week. Over the summer, 1,090 teachers from Berber background were given training to teach the language. By 2010, every Moroccan student – Arab or Berber - will have to learn the language, which uses an entirely different script than Arabic.
'This is a very important step in the history of the Amazigh struggle,' said Mounir Kejji, a Berber militant and writer who has long advocated greater recognition for his people. 'It is the first times Moroccans are reconciled with themselves.'"

LONDEN - Britse wetenschappers hebben de hardnekkige mythe ten gronde gericht over de relatie tussen het drinken van bier en de buikomvang. Bier blijkt helemaal geen bierbuik te veroorzaken, zo meldde de Britse krant The Times zaterdag op gezag van onderzoeker Martin Marmot van University College London.

Een groep wetenschappers die het fenomeen bierbuik wilde onderzoeken, ging uit van de geijkte ideeën dat veel bier onlosmakelijk verbonden is aan de buikomvang. 'Maar we vonden dat er weinig echte bewijzen voor zijn in de wetenschappelijke literatuur'', aldus Marmot. "

Het betreft een parlementair onderzoek naar het integratiebeleid van een reeks regeringen over een periode van dertig jaar. Bekeken moet worden hoe dat beleid er uitzag, of het in de praktijk werkte en of het consistent is geweest. Na maandenlang voorbereidend werk, vanaf december 2002, begonnen deze week de openbare verhoren van de commissie.
Niet de verhoren van de commissie maar het door haar uitbestede 'bronnenonderzoek' van het Verwey-Jonkerinstituut (VJI) trok deze week alle aandacht. Daarmee werd meteen weer duidelijk dat het minderheden-, allochtonen- of integratiebeleid een politiek zeer omstreden onderwerp is. Dat is overigens niets nieuws. Ten grondslag aan de commissie-Blok ligt een motie van SP-fractievoorzitter Jan Marijnissen. Hij verwoordde eind vorig jaar, het jaar van de Fortuyn-opstand, het gevoelen van velen in de samenleving om het politiek correcte denken over het integratiebeleid eindelijk eens aan de kaak te stellen. Andere partijen, op de LPF(!) na, sloten zich bij Marijnissens verzoek aan dit gevoelige overheidsbeleid kritisch tegen het licht te houden. "

Aantal abortus
In 2002 is het aantal overtijdbehandelingen en abortus samen 34.168. Dit aantal is exact gelijk
aan het aantal abortus plus overtijdbehandelingen in 2001 (zie tabel 1).
Het aantal behandelde vrouwen woonachtig in Nederland is 29.450; een toename van 1013 en
dit is een stijging van 3,6% ten opzichte van 2001. In 1992 was het aantal behandelde vrouwen
woonachtig in Nederland 19.422. Het verschil in absolute aantallen met 2002 is 51,6%.
Het abortuscijfers per 1000 vrouwen wonend in Nederland in de leeftijd van 15-44 jaar is in 2002
8,7 (tabel 2). Ten opzichte van 2001 is dit gestegen met 0,3 per 1000 vrouwen. In vergelijking
met 1992 is de stijging 3,2 per 1000 vrouwen in de vruchtbare leeftijd.
Signalen uit de abortusklinieken en Rutgers tichting duiden op voortzetting van de toename van
het aantal allochtone vrouwen en meisjes dat de instellingen bezoekt. Deze vrouwen en meisjes
komen vaker in de klinieken met een ongewenste zwangerschap, vragen op het gebied van
anticonceptie, SOA en seksualiteitsproblemen.
Het aantal vrouwen dat ongewenst zwanger wordt als gevolg van verkeerd gebruik van een
anticonceptiemiddel (onder andere de pil), lijkt ook toe te nemen.

[Commentaar: Wel goed lezen mensen en anders even een taalcursus gaan doen. Allochtone vrouwen en meisjes komen vaker dan voor heen naar die instellingen; die signalen zijn er tenminste (en kloppen wel is mijn indruk), maar er staat niet dat het meer is dan autochtonen. Misschien is dat wel maar het staat er niet! Iedere andere conclusie is onzorgvuldig en demonisering! ]

BRUSSEL - Allochtonen in België krijgen mogelijk wel gemeentelijk stemrecht in Wallonië maar niet in Vlaanderen. Met die oplossing willen de Vlaamse liberalen de onenigheid over het stemrecht voor migranten uit de weg ruimen, meldden Vlaamse kranten zaterdag.
In België wordt al jaren gesproken over een stemrecht voor allochtonen zoals dat in Nederland al bestaat. De socialisten zijn voor, maar de liberalen met wie ze samen de regering vormen, zijn verdeeld. De Franstalige liberalen willen het migrantenstemrecht wel invoeren, maar de Vlaamse Liberaal-Democraten (VLD), die de hete adem van het Vlaams Blok in de nek voelen, zien er niets in.
Fractievoorzitter Daems van de VLD vindt daarom dat Vlaanderen, Wallonië en het Brussels Gewest een eigen regeling moeten kunnen bedenken. Anders, zo redeneert hij, leggen de Walen hun wil op aan de Vlamingen. In de praktijk zal deze regeling erop neerkomen dat migranten alleen in Franstalig België gemeentelijk stemrecht krijgen. "

Met zijn roman 'De hongerende weg' (1991) werd de Nigeriaanse schrijver Ben Okri in één klap wereldberoemd. Vanwege de Nederlandse toneelbewerking was hij even in Nederland. Een gesprek over zijn laatste roman, de reis naar het paradijs en zijn metamorfose als schrijver.


Hij zweeft binnen op de champagne van de vorige avond, niet versuft maar vrolijk geprikkeld en alert. Enkele uren eerder was Ben Okri (1959) nog op het premièrefeest van 'De hongerende weg', een Nederlandstalige toneelbewerking van zijn gelijknamige roman. Nu neemt hij alweer gewillig plaats in de bibliotheek van het Amsterdamse Ambassade hotel. Okri spreekt met een diep, warm timbre, in wiegende, repeterende zinnen. Tijdens het gesprek zal hij verschillende keren transformeren: van bedachtzaam, docerend tot introvert en vriendelijk afwerend. Maar steeds geeft hij blijk van nieuwsgierigheid, een drive om ook van het zoveelste interview iets te maken. Transformatie is het sleutelwoord -van zijn werk, van zijn nieuwste roman 'In Arcadië'"

'Deugen' betekent hier: consistent zijn, rationeel kloppen. Wie, waarschuwt de site, net als Kierkegaard vindt dat er niets mankeert aan innerlijke tegenstrijdigheid in religiosis, kan beter een ander spel gaan doen. Vragen hoef je alleen maar met 'waar' of 'onwaar' te beantwoorden. De gezondheid van de speler staat onder in beeld. Die wordt bedreigd met ieder antwoord dat met een vorig strijdt, door een salvo van de filosofische scherpschutter."

Factor is een wekelijkse zoektocht achter het nieuws. Steeds wordt nieuws ontleed of laat Factor zien dat een ogenschijnlijk kleine gebeurtenis een grote som in het nieuws kan worden. Inhoudelijk legt Factor de nadruk op de beeldvorming met betrekking tot mensen in achterstandsituaties. Geregeld komen onderwerpen aan bod die buiten het blikveld van de westerse samenleving vallen.

Veel migranten maken geld over naar hun land van herkomst. Ze steunen daarmee familie en/of leveren een bijdrage aan projecten, en sparen op die manier soms ook voor hun eigen oude dag. Deze geldstroom is van wezenlijk belang voor de veelal arme streken waar migranten vandaan komen. Om wat voor bedragen gaat het en wat gebeurt er precies met het geld? Factor presenteert de resultaten van een onderzoek hiernaar dat in opdracht IKON is uitgevoerd. Het onderzoek richt zich op Marokkanen, Turken, Somaliërs en Ghanezen. En we volgden Marokkaanse Nederlanders op vakantie in hun geboortestreek.

Het overgrote deel van de 280.000 Marokkanen in Nederland komt oorspronkelijk uit het Rifgebergte. Ze zijn er zelf geboren en getogen of hebben er familie wonen. De werkloosheid in dit gebied is hoog en ‘achterblijvers’ zijn voor hun levensonderhoud grotendeels afhankelijk van familie in het westen. Jaarlijks brengt Mohamed Sqhir zijn vakantie door in Marokko. Factor ontmoet hem onder meer bij een bezoek aan het plattelandsschooltje dat hij en zijn achterban twee jaar geleden hebben gebouwd. Een jaar lobbyen leverde ongeveer 15.000 euro op aan particuliere gelden. Onder druk van Sqir committeerde de Marokkaanse overheid zich aan het leveren van twee docenten en lesmateriaal. “Die commitments heb je nodig voor de continuïteit”, zegt Sqhir in Factor.

De Rotterdammer Rabah Kasmi loopt met gemengde gevoelens over de anderhalve kilometer weg die naar het gehucht Fassir loopt. De weg is voor de helft klaar. Voor de resterende anderhalve kilometer moet hij na zijn vakantie weer gaan collecteren. “Mensen denken dat we het geld zo kunnen ophoesten, maar velen van ons kunnen het maar net opbrengen”, verzucht hij.

Veel migranten maken geld over naar hun land van herkomst. Ze steunen daarmee familie en/of leveren een bijdrage aan projecten, en sparen op die manier soms ook voor hun eigen oude dag. Deze geldstroom is van wezenlijk belang voor de veelal arme streken waar migranten vandaan komen. Om wat voor bedragen gaat het en wat gebeurt er precies met het geld? Factor presenteert de resultaten van een onderzoek hiernaar dat in opdracht IKON is uitgevoerd. Het onderzoek richt zich op Marokkanen, Turken, Somaliërs en Ghanezen. En we volgden Marokkaanse Nederlanders op vakantie in hun geboortestreek.

Het overgrote deel van de 280.000 Marokkanen in Nederland komt oorspronkelijk uit het Rifgebergte. Ze zijn er zelf geboren en getogen of hebben er familie wonen. De werkloosheid in dit gebied is hoog en ‘achterblijvers’ zijn voor hun levensonderhoud grotendeels afhankelijk van familie in het westen. Uw krantenkop van 20 september ('Meerderheid is voor Europese grondwet') klopt niet. Niet 51 procent is voor de Europese grondwet, maar 37 procent. Die 37 procent veranderde in 51 procent nadat de ondervraagden informatie over de grondwet kregen. Uit algemeen aanvaarde onderzoeksnormen volgt dat zo'n gewijzigd percentage alleen voor het cohort geldt, en niet voor de bevolking als geheel. De correcte uitspraak in deze blijft dat 37 procent van de bevolking voor een Europese grondwet is.
Een ernstiger punt is dat de toename van 37 procent naar 51 procent, nadat de respondenten meer informatie over de grondwet kregen, misleidend is. Dat hangt immers af van welke informatie de respondenten over de grondwet kregen. Waarschijnlijk heeft men een aantal positieve punten van de grondwet genoemd, waardoor het percentage toenam van 37 procent naar 51 procent. Had men een aantal nadelen van de grondwet gegeven, dan had het percentage bijvoorbeeld kunnen zakken van 37 procent naar 17 procent. Die 51 procent zegt dus vrij weinig. Zowel de feiten als de conclusies van uw stuk kloppen dus helaas niet.

AMSTERDAM/DEN HAAG - De Verenigde Staten hebben Nederland gevraagd om de uitlevering van drie personen die worden verdacht van banden met AlQa'ida. De Amsterdamse rechtbank bevestigt dat het gaat om twee genaturaliseerde Nederlanders en een buitenlander zonder verblijfsvergunning.

Het is de eerste keer dat Nederland een verzoek krijgt om onderdanen uit te leveren op verdenking van steun aan Al Qa'ida, het terreurnetwerk van Osama bin Laden.
De verdachten werkten in een Amsterdams belhuis en zouden telecommunicatiediensten hebben geleverd aan bevriende leden van Al Qa'ida. Doel was om wereldwijd te communiceren zonder sporen achter te laten, hetgeen dus is mislukt. "

Detailed account of Muslims in China:

The Ancient Record of the Tang Dynasty notes that in the second year of the rule of Gaozong (31; A.D. 651) an emissary from Arabia came to the royal court bearing gifts. The emissary claimed that his state had been established thirty-one years before, which would mean that he reached the Tang court during the Caliphate of Uthman. According to the traditions of the Muslims of China this is considered to be the first time that Islam was brought to China. The leader of this delegation was Said Ibn Abi Waqqas, one of the noted Companions of the Prophet. His party included fifteen persons who had traveled together by way of the Indian Ocean and the China Sea to the port city of Guangzhou in southeasterb China, going overland from there to the capital city, Chang'an, where they paid their respects to the emperor.

The emperor, after searching inquiries about Islam, gave general approval to the new religion -- which he considered to be compatible with the teachings of Confucius -- but he felt that five daily prayers and a month of fasting were requirements too severe for his taste, and he was not converted. He gave Said Ibn Abi Waqqas and his delegation freedom to propagate their faith and expressed his admiration for Islam by ordering the establishment of the first mosque at Chang'an, an important event in the history of Islam. This mosque still stands in excellent condition in modern Xi'an after ages of repairs and restorations.

Years later when Said Ibn Abi Waqqas was advanced in age and in ill health, he received permission to return to his homeland, but unfortunately he died on the way and was buried at Guangzhou. The mosque built at the site of his grave, in memory of the holiness of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.), is still preserved today, the second historic mosque in China. Most of his followers died in China and others returned to their homeland.

The first Muslims to arrive in China came by the sea route, following the example of the visit and preaching of Said Ibn Abi Waqqas and his party which laid the foundation stone of Islam in China. Many Arab and Persian visitors came to China for commercial and religious reasons, both under the Umayyads and the Abbasids. The Arabians who came in the time of the Umayyads were known in China as the White Robed Tashi and when relations between China and the Muslim empire further improved under the Abbasids, their emissaries were known as the Black Robed Tashi. The Umayyads and Abbasids sent five or six delegations to China, ranging from a few to a score of persons in each party, bringing precious gifts to the Chinese emperors. These delegations were cordially received by the Chinese and laden with gifts to carry back to the Caliphs, indicating the continuing friendly relations between China and the Muslim rulers.

In the century and a half between 31 and 184 (A.D. 651-800) a considerable number of Arabs and Persians came to China by the sea route. Initially they settled in Guangzhou but gradually began to push their way along the coast to the main cities and even as far north as Hangzhou. Wherever they went they gathered contributions and built mosques as centres for their religion, mosques which were relatively large and well-built, attesting to the substantial economic position of the traders. Many of those historically important mosques are still preserved, but in some places the converts have dwindled through the ages and the mosques remain today as historical ruins. During this period a growing number of Arabs and Persians settled down in China, many of them marrying Chinese.

The Arabs and the Persians who came to China by sea exercised great influence in trade with a virtual monopoly of the import and export business. By the time of the Song dynasty (349-678; A.D. 960-1279) a foreign quarter and bazaar had been established in Guangzhou. The office of Director General of Shipping was created to take charge of the movement of commodities through the port and to supervise customs and other commercial matters -- a post which was for the most part held by a Muslim.

While the Muslims who came by sea were settling in the south along the coast, Islam was introduced into northwest China by the overland route. For some time the Xiongnu tribes of northwest China had caused constant border disturbances. After they were conquered by the Arabs these tribes were gradually converted to Islam. During the Tang dynasty, in 138-146 (A.D. 755-763), Emperor Xuanzong was faced with the An Lushan rebellion which forced him to take refuge in Sichuan. He sent emissaries to ask for assistance from the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad who sent him a deputation of 40,000 soldiers who aided him in his struggle with the rebels. In recognition of their valuable services Xuanzong gave the soldiers the choice of returning to their homes laden with gifts or of remaining in China. When they all elected to remain they were settled on farm land and given young women in marriage. Thus they were provided with land, homes, and an opportunity to live in peace and happiness. These new settlers became the part of the founding fathers of the Muslim communities of northwest China.

The improved relations with the Xiongnu tribes brought greater numbers of their people into China proper for business, many of whom chose to settle there. Still later Iranians, Central Asian Turks and Afghans came through the northwest to Chang'an, continuing the introduction of Islam to China by the overland route.

The Rise and temporary Fall of Islam in China

During the Tang dynasty (ended 295; A.D. 907) and the Song dynasty (349-678; A.D. 960-1279) foreign trade grew steadily as Arabs, Turks and Iranians took silk, art objects, Chinese porcelain, and other commodities to the Middle East and to Europe, returning with herbs, spices, pearls, and other products of those areas. They became middlemen in a most profitable trade which attracted ever greater numbers for commerce and the propagation of their faith, and as the new traders came to China more Muslim communities were established in the southeast and northwest parts of the country. These Muslim communities became a strong force in Chinese society. Because these Arab, Turk and Iranian Muslim were law-abiding and self-disciplined citizens of high economic status they were received with respect and friendship by the Han (Chinese) people and were given the confidence and protection of the government. During the Tang and Song dynasties there was no anti-foreign feeling on the part of the government, and the Muslim population was able to increase steadily and move inland. Thus the Chinese and Islam lived together in harmony and tolerance.

The Yuan dynasty was considered a foreign dynasty because it started under Genghis Khan, whose Mongol forces occupied China, Central Asia, Iran, Arabia, and parts of Eastern Europe. When these areas were divided Into various kingdoms, Kublai Khan became the ruler of China and Mongolia, and the founder of the Yuan dynasty. Of the other areas which were for a time under Mongol control, the kingdoms of Central Asia were converted to Islam. Throughout the whole area the freedom of travel maintained by the Mongols encouraged great crosscurrents of peoples and cultures -- the Chinese into Central Asia and the Arabs, Turks, and the Iranians into China -- which brought an influx into China of Muslim merchants and also Muslim doctors, scholars, astronomers, astrologers, and high-ranking warriors who were attached to the Mongol army as advisors, military aides, and staff officers. Although the Yuan dynasty was Mongolian, Muslims enhanced their standing by holding positions of military and civil power, and the propagation of the faith was greatly facilitated. According to the eminent Chinese historian Professor Ding Xuewu Ting, over thirty Muslims were high officials at the royal court in Peking, and the governors of nine provinces were Muslims.

Of the many important Muslims at the royal court of the Mongols, Sayid Ajal was the most prominent. Rising through a series of high offices, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Mongolian Expeditionary Forces in Sichuan and was appointed the governor of the province in 671 (A.D. 1272). Two years later he was transferred to the governorship of Yunnan where his enlightened and glorious rule hastened the spread of Chinese culture into the remote southwest, bringing the Thai and Malay indigeneous people of Yunnan, Chinese law, education, and improved agriculture. He did this without prejudice as to race or religion and without forced conversion of the people to Islam -- on the contrary, he was the first to establish Buddhist and Daoist temples in Yunnan. Many of the cultural patterns of the present day are due to this great governor whose name is still revered by all the people of Yunnan, Han and non-Han alike. Were it not for his religion, he would long since have been worshiped! in the temples.

The great Iranian historian, Rashidu'd-Din Fadlu'llah, in his remarkable history Iami'u't-Tawarikh -- the first volume of which deals with the history of the Mongols -- tells us that "China during the Mongolian dynasty of Kublai Khan was administered in twelve districts, with a governor and vice-governor in each. Of these twelve governors, eight were Muslims. In the remaining districts, Muslims were vice-governors." Thus we can imagine the status and importance of Muslims in China during the Yuan dynasty

The Yuan dynasty lasted for roughly ninety years (678-770; A.D. I 279-1368) until it was overthrown and the Ming dynasty was established. During the Ming dynasty -- which ruled almost three centuries, from 770 to 1054 (A.D. 1368-644) -- the Muslims made many great contributions to the life of China, and Islam continued to occupy its rightful place as a popular religion.

By the beginning of the Ming dynasty Islam had been in China for seven centuries. The considerable number of Muslims who had settled in China and the conversions that ensued among the Chinese had laid a secure foundation for Islam, but during those seven hundred years in spite of the overall assimilation of foreign settlers into the Han Chinese mainstream, some Arab, Turkic, Iranian and Afghan Muslims had retained their alien status as a special class which preserved its own language, customs, and manners and was not yet fully integrated with the Han people. Under the Ming dynasty, however, they slowly lost their alien status and became Chinese citizens, and their manner of living was gradually Sinicized.

The most striking example of this process of integration was the adoption of Chinese surnames. Many foreign Muslims who married Chinese wives adopted the name of the wife. In most cases they picked Chinese names which sounded closest to their original names. For example, the surname Ma originally belonged to a prominent Han Chinese family and many historical figures were named Ma. Many Muslim men from the Middle East and Central Asia whose names started with the letter M took the name Ma, partly because of the similarity in sound, and partly because the Muslims love horses and the character Ma stands for horses. Thus so many Muslims of northwest China bear the surname Ma that there is a common saying, "Nine Ma in ten Muslims." The Chinese surnames Mo, Mai, and Mu have been adopted by Muslim immigrants whose names were Mohammed, Mustafa, Murad, Masoud. Many of them who found no existing common Chinese surname sounding like their names simply used the Chinese character sounding closest to their name -- Da for Daoud and Tahir; Ha for Hassan; He for Hussein; Ding for Jelaluddin, Shamsuddin, Ghamaruddin; Sai for Said and Saad; Na for Nasser and Naguib; Sha for Salem, Salih, Sabih; Ai for Issa and Amin.

The Ming dynasty may be called the golden age of Muslims in China, for long years of peace and prosperity brought a flowering of art and culture in which the Muslims participated. Prominent Muslims had taken part in the establishment of the Ming dynasty, and later, in the reign of Yongle from 808 to 836 (A.D. 1405-32), the eminent Muslim statesman Zheng He was sent by the monarch to establish friendly relations with the countries of the southeast Asia and with India, Arabia, and East Africa. During the Ming dynasty Muslims continued in positions of power, it is even said that the Ming was a dynasty of Muslims. There is even evidence for the claim that Zhu Yuanzhang (Hongwu), the founder of the dynasty, is a Muslim. It is pointed out that his wife, Empress Ma, was a Muslim Turkic princess from Central Asia, that many of his responsible officials are Muslims, that he never worshiped in a temple after his accession, that he forbade public drunkedness, that he composed the hymn of praise of one hundred words to the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.uh.) which may still be found inscribed in the main mosque in Nanjing, and that historians mention his "strange" facial features, which may have been due to foreign blood as a descendant of a Persian or Arab. At any rate, Muslims were well treated during the Ming dynasty and there was perfect harmony between the Muslim and the non-Muslim Chinese.

The Qing dynasty ruled from 1054 to 1329 (A.D. 1644-1911). This last imperial dynasty of China was not a dynasty of the Han people, but of another smaller Chinese ethnic group that managed to secede from China, the Manchus. The Manchus established by force the Qing imperialism which ruled over the majority of Han, Turkic, Mongolian, and Tibetan people. Their ruthless policy of divide and rule, setting off one group of people against another, meant the beginning of trouble for the Muslims of China. The Qing dynasty, jealous of the influence of the Muslims and fearful of a counterrevolutionary attempt to restore the Ming dynasty, created many incidents to foment anti-Islamic feeling. The Chinese Muslims reacted with violence several times and the Qing dynasty retaliated with their army. Since their armies were led and manned by Han soldiers from southeast China, these incidents have led to enmity between northern and southern Han Chinese that until today continues to present a dangerous threat to Chinese national unity. There were four major so-called Muslim rebellions between 1236 and 1293 (A.D. 1820-76) even though many non-Muslims participated in the revolutionary struggle to free China from the Machu yoke.

The loss of life and property as a consequence of these events was severe, and the spiritual and psychological reactions of the Muslims were unfortunate. However with the downfall of the Manchu dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China, the status of the Muslims in China entered a new era because the founder of the Republic, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, in his wisdom and foresight, proclaimed that all the components of the Chinese mosaic have equal status in that they are all of a big family.

Even the smallest mosque is nowadays equipped with a loudspeaker - a major culprit in the city's ever rising noise pollution.
At times, you could hear raucous voices coming at you from all directions against the constant cacophony of car honks, street vendors and general street noise in one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
Gone are the days when the call to prayer came from a mellifluous tenor or baritone unaccompanied by the crackle of a rusty loudspeaker. It used to be the beauty of the voice that was part of the seduction to pray. "

NEW YORK (AP) -- Edward W. Said, a Columbia University professor, scholar and leading spokesman in the United States for the Palestinian cause, has died, his editor at Knopf publishers said Thursday. He was 67.
Said had suffered from leukemia for years and died at a New York hospital late Wednesday, editor Shelley Wanger said.
Said was born in 1935 in Jerusalem, then part of British-ruled Palestine, but he spent most of his adult life in the United States. He wrote passionately about the Palestinian cause but also on a variety of other subjects, from English literature, his academic specialty, to music and culture. "

Muslim religious leaders have joined Christian and Jewish leaders for the first time in issuing a joint plea for tolerance for gay people.
In an open letter written in support of Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the group, which includes two bishops, has criticised incitement to religious hatred and aggressive proselytisation as practised by some fundamentalist evangelical Christians.
Dr Williams has been targeted by hardliners in the Church of England for his suggestion that same sex relationships need not always be regarded as sinful.
The joint letter, issued today to coincide with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, calls on believers of all religions to unite in opposition to extremism. "

No religion has a monopoly on violence. Christianity has the Spanish Inquisition and the bloody excesses of the Crusades. The Jews have the Book of Joshua and Baruch Goldstein. More recently, India's Hindus massacred thousands of Muslims in Gujarat province. Over the course of human history, hundreds of millions have died in senseless sectarian massacres, and a thousand more examples might easily be listed.
But it will not do to take the politically correct course and lump all religions in the same basket, at least not insofar as our own era is concerned. Christian civilization underwent a Reformation in the 16th century, embraced the Enlightenment with its intellectual and theological pluralism, separated Church from State and encouraged scholarship and democracy. Judaism has followed a similar process -- as have, more recently, the faiths of the far East. Islam, on the other hand, is still struggling with this transition. And if there is to be peace in the Middle East and an end to terror worldwide, Muslims must accept that their faith is overdue for a doctrinal overhaul."

DEN HAAG, 25 SEPT. Twee weken spreekrecht hebben de onderzoekers van het Hilda Verwey-Jonker Instituut gisteren gekregen van de parlementaire commissie die het integratiebeleid in de laatste dertig jaar inventariseert. Onderzoeksleider Jan Willem Duyvendak popelde al dagen om antwoord te geven op de kritiek uit de Tweede Kamer op het vertrouwelijke vooronderzoek dat het instituut voor de commissie verrichtte. Duyvendak, broer van Kamerlid Wijnand Duyvendak van GroenLinks, zou als mede-auteur van het verkiezingsprogramma van GroenLinks bovendien niet aan de conclusie willen dat het integratiebeleid mislukt is. Niets van waar, zegt Duyvendak: ,,Ik lijk misschien op mijn broer, maar ik ben hem niet. Ik ben van de feiten.'' Duyvendak, sinds juli hoogleraar sociologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, wordt af en toe onderbroken door Hans Boutellier, die Duyvendak opvolgde als directeur van het Verwey-Jonker Instituut. ,,Niets zeggen over de commissie, Jan Willem. Dat is de voorwaarde.''"

Het rapport over het integratiebeleid van de afgelopen dertig jaar is vanmorgen vrijgegeven na toestemming van de parlementaire onderzoekscommissie integratiebeleid die opdracht had gegeven tot het aanvankelijk vertrouwelijke onderzoek. Uit de Tweede Kamer kwam de afgelopen dagen toenemende kritiek op de betrokkenheid van het instituut, omdat het ook advies geeft aan overheden over integratiebeleid."

DEN HAAG, 25 SEPT. Relatief succesvol. Zo kwalificeert het Verwey-Jonker Instituut het integratiebeleid van de afgelopen dertig jaar. Het vanmorgen vrijgegeven rapport van het instituut (Bronnenonderzoek integratiebeleid) is, kortom, gematigd positief over het gevoerde beleid. ,,Het verkleinen van de achterstand is met name gelukt op het terrein van het onderwijs; de evenredigheidsdoelstelling is op het terrein van werk en inkomen minder gehaald. Op het terrein van het wonen zijn veel doelstellingen gerealiseerd; de huisvestingssituatie van migranten is aanzienlijk verbeterd, zowel in absolute als in relatieve zin.''"

Vrijdag 26 september 2003 - Een nieuwe tegelvloer en een bar zijn de opvallende verschillen met De Draak Expresse zoals het jarenlang was. Maar de glas-in-lood-ruiten en de houten luifel aan de gevel van het pand aan de Stationsweg in Den Bosch zijn teruggekeerd.

Het pand waar jarenlang broodjeszaak De Draak Expresse was gevestigd, is sinds kort verhuurd aan Marco Boelens, eigenaar van een bedrijf dat horecabedrijven verbouwt en inricht. Hij wil het bedrijf in oude luister herstellen en zoekt een exploitant die het pand als brasserie wil 'runnen'. Boelens heeft zich er op toegelegd om 'nieuw leven te blazen in horecabedrijven met een historie'. Hij verwijst naar bedrijven in Cromvoirt zoals herberg 't Centrum en café De Ruiter en Vughtse cafés zoals De Klok en Schuttershof. zegt het pand voor 2.250 euro per maand te huren van eigenaar P. van Amelsfoort. Hij wil het voor hetzelfde bedrag verhuren aan een exploitant. Daar komt een eenmalig bedrag bovenop voor de inrichting en verbouwing. "

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De VN-vluchtelingenorganisatie Unhcr heeft Nederland afgelopen zomer op de vingers getikt over het asielbeleid. Dat blijkt uit een brief die de organisatie aan de Tweede Kamer heeft geschreven voor een hoorzitting over het asielbeleid donderdag.
In een notitie over de invoering van de Vreemdelingenwet 2000 heeft de Unhcr vooral kritiek op de versnelde procedure op aanmeldcentra en het verhoren van kinderen zonder begeleiding. Volgens Unhcr is er wel een aantal dingen ten positieve veranderd, maar de organisatie wilde haar kritiek toch met de Kamer delen.
Tijdens de hoorzitting besprak de Kamer het al eerder verschenen rapport van mensenrechtenorganisatie Human Rights Watch waarin Nederland wordt beticht van het schenden van internationale afspraken. "

Ruud Koopmans, hoogleraar sociologie aan de VU, was trots op het Nederlandse integratiebeleid toen hij in 1994 vertrok naar het vooraanstaande Wissenschaftszentrum in Berlijn. Hij was gevraagd onderzoek te komen naar rechts-extremisme in Duitsland, maar dat werd al snel uitgebreid naar immigratievraagstukken in heel West-Europa.
Hij verdedigde het Nederlandse beleid ook naar mede-onderzoekers met verve. Nederland kende immers geen rassenrellen zoals Frankrijk en geen racistisch geweld zoals Duitsland.
Maar toen kwamen de onderzoeksresultaten. Bij participatie van nieuwkomers aan het publieke debat scoorde Nederland nog een derde plaats na Engeland, Frankrijk en voor Duitsland en Zwitserland. Dat wekte al zijn verbazing. Het onderzoek breidde zich toen uit naar de 'harde' integratie. En op deze sociaal-economische indicatoren, zoals werkloosheid, beroep op de bijstand, scholing, achterstandswijken en criminaliteit bleef Nederland ruimschoots achteraan bungelen. Het was vijfde en laatste.
Het leidde bij Koopmans tot een omslag in zijn denken. Deed Nederland het wel zo goed op het gebied van integratie? Persoonlijke observaties bevestigden zijn vermoeden. En als de cijfers de waarheid spraken, waar was het dan misgegaan?"

Aan de parlementaire onderzoekscommissie integratiebeleid het oordeel. Is het integratiebeleid nu mislukt of niet? Het -veelbesproken- rapport van het Verwey-Jonker Instituut trekt na 216 pagina's de conclusie dat naar de huidige maatstaven het beleid nog onvoldoende geslaagd is. Socioloog Ruud Koopmans, getuige voor de commissie, riep dat jaren geleden al."

Misschien hebben die paar kamerleden gelijk die vinden dat de parlementaire onderzoekscommissie naar het integratiebeleid in Nederland het Hilda Verwey-Jonker Instituut beter niet had kunnen betrekken bij haar onderzoek. Per slot van rekening heeft dit instituut de overheid jarenlang geadviseerd over dit onderwerp. Dan ligt een al te kritisch oordeel over het overheidshandelen niet erg voor de hand.


Maar zelfs als dat zo is, dan nog is dit geen goede reden voor het SP-kamerlid Lazrak om verontwaardigd uit de onderzoekscommissie te stappen, of voor de VVD-kamerleden Hirsi Ali en Van Aartsen (die beiden geen deel uitmaken van deze commissie) om het vuurtje op te stoken met de voorbarige uitspraak dat er op deze manier van een objectief integratieonderzoek geen sprake kan zijn. Hoezo zou dat niet kunnen? De commissie is nog maar net met haar werk begonnen. Zouden zij het eindrapport nu al kunnen voorspellen?"

DEN HAAG - Kamerleden moeten ophouden de werkwijze van de commissie integratiebeleid te bekritiseren. Anders wordt het voor de commissie onmogelijk om tot een geloofwaardig eindrapport te komen over de vraag of het integratiebeleid is mislukt.


Dit zegt de voorzitter van de commissie, de VVD'er Blok, naar aanleiding van kritische opmerkingen gisteren van zijn partijgenote Hirsi Ali en eerder van het uit de commissie gestapte SP-kamerlid Lazrak. Blok kreeg gisteren steun van Tweede-Kamervoorzitter Weisglas. Hij 'betreurt' de uitspraken, terwijl het onderzoek net begonnen is. Maar volgens de VVD-fractieleider Van Aartsen is er niks mis met het optreden van Hirsi Ali.
De liberale Hirsi Ali is geen lid van de integratiecommissie, maar gisteren verklaarde ze wel te twijfelen aan de uitkomst van het onderzoek. ,,Ik ben niet gerust of de uitkomst integer zal zijn,'' zei zij gisteren voor Radio 1. Zij deelt het bezwaar van Lazrak, die de betrokkenheid hekelde van het Hilda Verweij-Jonker Instituut bij het onderzoek van de commissie."
